Martin Luther filled many books with his writings and he is remembered for going on record with opinions on nearly everything (and everyone) he encountered.

What is your favorite quotation from Martin Luther? Why does it speak to you?

"It is through living, indeed through dying and being damned that one becomes a theologian, not through understanding, reading, or speculation" -- Martin Luther

I ran across this quote from Luther in a textbook for my "History of Christian Thought" class in seminary. I have held onto it for years, and use it in my email signature, to remind me and others that theology arises from life, and that the Good News addresses us in the flesh - not in the abstract. This is incarnational theology from a pastoral theologian. Thank God for the life and witness of Martin Luther, one of God's sinning saints!

Maybe a slight paraphrase, but in Luther's letter to Zwingli about Real Presence, Luther said," God is everywhere. He is even in my cabbage soup."

I was in Louisiana recently, during Mardi Gras season. We went into a bead store to find some things to take home. I found one set of beads with a cabbage on them. When I asked I was told that they were worn for the Saint Patrick's Day parade. Apparently, in that parade the float riders throw cabbages, potatoes, and carrots. Since some of the floats are double deckers, I am told that you better pay attention, since those vegetables sting when thrown. Pass the soup, please.
