Donald Breede

My vocation (or calling in life): business owner — Hagen’s Fish Market Inc. — now semi-retired.

My congregation: Edison Park Lutheran Church, Chicago.

My favorite Bible verse: 1 Peter 5:10, “And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you.” (I’m a pancreatic cancer survivor, and this strengthened my faith and allowed me to be among the 4 percent that survive this disease.)

My favorite Christmas carol: “Silent Night.”

I prefer to sit here during worship: in the middle.

What’s playing on my iPod right now: John Denver.

My perfect day: Every day is now a blessing.

Someone who inspires me: Pastor Michael Sparby.

People would be surprised to know that: I sing in the shower.

The best thing I learned in Sunday school: never went.

I am most proud of my congregation when: we remember (God’s) will and not ours.

My favorite volunteer project: Bible study leader and serving on council.

What “living Lutheran” means to me: giving myself to Christ.

I’m doing God’s work with my hands when: I’m helping others.
