Is your congregation going to plant a vegetable garden?

If your congregation is fortunate enough to have the space for a vegetable garden, who maintains it and where does the produce go? What are the benefits, besides fresh vegetables, of having the garden?

Maybe, maybe not. We have had one the past several years. The bulk of the produce goes to the local food pantry. Our members enjoy some of the harvest as well. We have had varying success with it over the years. Irrigation is difficult and then there are the "critters" to contend with. It's hard work to grow crops in a suburban oasis! As often happens with long running programs, the volunteer pool is lessening. Last year two age 70+ members did almost all the gardening. We wonder if the money and effort we put into the garden couldn't be better spent buying food from real farmers and voluntering at the food bank. However, there is something satisfying about growing your food on God's little acre.
