I'm doing a modified form of fasting. Three small meals plus a small snack at 3:00 PM (or I can't make it through the afternoon). Fasting is traditional, and tradition is usually tradition because it works. Part of the modification is that if someone offers me something to eat outside of my discipline, I accept it. To say,"No, I'm fasting," would be to draw attention to the fast and that's a no-no (Matt. 6). Of course, fasting doesn't earn us Brownie-points with God; but it can help us focus our attention on our dependence on Him for all things and remind us, in some tiny way, of Christ's self-denial and suffering.
